Following on from the success of the Level 3 Canine Emergency First Aid qualification, iPET Network are proud to have now also developed the first UK regulated Equine Emergency First Aid qualification. 

The NEW iPET Network Level 2 Award in Principles of Equine Emergency First Aid is an ideal starter qualification for horse owners and equine students who want to be prepared should a horse under their care need emergency treatment. The qualification has been designed to address the theory of the most commonly faced first aid scenarios to include wounds and bleeding, fractures, colic, collapse, poisoning and handling the horse safely in emergency situations. This qualification provides an introduction to the theoretical knowledge required to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies and allows the opportunity to progress to study Equine Emergency First Aid at Level 3.

This qualification has been designed to enable Candidates to:

• Define the objectives of equine first aid and understand how to classify different types of emergencies.

• Know how to safely handle horses in emergency situations.

• Understand how to complete a primary and secondary survey of the horse including the theory of how to take a TPR (temperature, pulse and respiration).

• Identify the signs and appropriate first aid management of wounds, bleeding and fractures including principles of applying bandages.

• Identify the signs and appropriate first aid treatment of digestive emergencies including choke and colic.

• Identify the signs and first aid for eye-related emergencies.

• State the signs and appropriate first aid treatment of lameness and poisoning.

• List the requirements and contents of an emergency first aid kit for horses.

The iPET Network Level 2 Award in Principles of Equine Emergency First Aid consists of one mandatory unit:

Unit 215: Principles of Equine Emergency First Aid (1 credit)

This qualification is valid for three years after which Candidates will require registration on a refresher qualification.

Please note, this qualification covers the theory of equine first aid only. Candidates wishing to also undertake practical first aid training should see the iPET Network Level 3 Award in Equine Emergency First Aid qualification
